What’s It All About
The Mumbai Academy of the Moving Image (MAMI)
is a public trust that organises an annual international film festival called
the Mumbai Film Festival (MFF). It was launched in 1997, when a group of film
industry stalwarts headed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee founded MAMI as a non profit
trust to organise an annual international film festival that the film industry
and the country could be proud of.
MAMI appreciates good cinema, stripped of
limiting labels like ‘art’ and ‘commercial’. It believes this can only come
about through exposure to the best of films the world has to offer. Filmmaker
Shyam Benegal is Chairman of the trust. The Mumbai Film Festival programme is
divided into nine sections:
• International Competition for the First
Feature Films of Directors
• World Cinema
• Indian Frame
• Dimensions Mumbai
• Celebrate Age
• Retrospectives
• Above the Cut
• New Faces in Indian Cinema
• The Real Reel
Locations
Cinemax
Versova is the main hub. There will also be screenings at Metro Big Cinemas and
Cinemax Sion.
Special Events
Taking
another step forward with a much needed initiative is the Mumbai Film Mart,
which will be held from October 15 to 17 under the aegis of the MMF.
There will be a special focus on
non-traditional growing markets for Indian cinema in China, Korea, Japan,
Europe and Latin America with confirmed attendance of buyers.
The MFM will also provide a platform to acquire
some of the most outstanding films being screened at the MFF. Direct contact
will be established with world sales agents.
